U2 again (this time the 'Zoo TV' tour)/ the Pixies Pussy Galore (twice, opened for second time!) The Residents (at the Tempodrom in Berlin!)Īmerican Music Club (5 or 6 times, Eitzel solo about a half dozen more) Nice Strong Arm (nearly 100 times I'd guess) Neil Young (about 15 times with and without Crazy Horse)įirehose (multiple, including the famous Sonic Butt Fire show at Liberty Lunch)Įinsturzende Neubauten (starting in 1986, a total of eight times) The Flaming Lips (about fifty times, between 19) UB40 / Midnight Oil (twice - again in 1988)ġ0,000 Maniacs (once in '86, then again in '93 and, lastly, in post-Natalie '96 in Jamestown with my parents!) King Crimson (the 1981 tour, in Houston & Austin, then again in '96 & 2000) 'the British are Coming' (which included Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and a whole bunch of folks like that) Laurie Anderson (twice, once in 1984, then also in 1989) I know there will be a shitload of shows that I've forgotten, and so many shows from my time in Austin that were too obscure and local to mention, but here is my list (with the right to revise when I go "oh yeah!" later on): It was a great show, but not really the coolest of first shows, so, for many years since, when asked, I'd tell people that my first show was Fleetwood Mac, on the 'Rumours' tour, in El Paso TX. My parents let my uncle Bob take me to see Harry Chapin at the Pan American center. In fact, aside from seeing a few bands at local fireman's carnivals playing cover songs the first real concert I got to see was in Las Cruces, NM, in early spring 1977. Black Sabbath came to Buffalo with Mahogany Rush opening and I BEGGED my dad to take me (this would've been when 'Sabotage' came out) and was denied. I'd always hear the promo's for whomever was coming to Buffalo or Rochester, and the Stones would usually start their US tours in Buffalo at the Bills stadium in Orchard Park. Once I caught the rock bug, and saw such mythical happenings as 'Monterry Pop' and weekly installments of 'Don Kirshner's Rock Concert' and 'the Midnight Special' (when it was still mostly rock and not hosted by the Captain & Tenille every week!), I longed to go to my first rock concert. This live album, along with Deep Purple's 'Made In Japan,' were the earliest concert experiences I ever had, enjoyed in the privacy of my special little room in our basement.
